Obama: It happens when a father realizes he doesn’t just love his daughter, but also her wife. It happens when a soldier tells his unit that he’s gay and they tell him they knew it all along and they didn’t care ‘cause he was the toughest guy in the unit. It happens when a video sparks a movement to let every single young person know they’re not alone and things will get better. It happens when people look past their ultimately minor differences to see themselves in the hopes and struggles of their fellow human beings! That’s where change is happening! And that’s not just the story of the gay rights movement. That’s the story of America.

“Pridefest, Milwaukee, WI. June 10th, 2006.
The entrance to pride fest was filled with protesters yelling and screaming about how we were going to die for our sins, how god was against us. This one guy was asking people, “What it love?” And I walked up to him and I said, “Love is a deep understanding and respect between two people.”
He had nothing to say.
And off to the side… I see this woman standing by herself, holding a sign. I casually walk over, assuming that she is with this nasty group of protesters… and lo & behold, this is what I find. I smiled and looked down at the ground for a moment before asking her if I could take her photo. Tears came to my eyes as I walked away.”
“Don’t consider suicide. Consider revenge. Consider what I get to do now. Know that this could be your life, too. Grow up and let anyone try to contend with the adult you. The grown-up you will be fearsome and tremendous, not only for all the pain you have endured but also because you have survived it. I cannot wait to meet you, tall and mighty in your grown glory. Stay here so we can eventually come together and be friends. Stay so you can tell me your story. I need to hear it.”
